Polish citizenship by marriage: help for spouses of Polish citizens
Marriage to a Polish citizen does not make you Polish automatically, but it opens a faster route to Polish citizenship than for other foreigners. I help spouses of Polish citizens through each stage: residence permits, permanent residence and, finally, the application for recognition as a Polish citizen.
I work with clients in English, prepare and file the applications in Polish, and represent clients before the voivode and, where needed, on appeal.
What I help with
- temporary residence permits for the spouse of a Polish citizen
- permanent residence permits based on marriage to a Polish citizen
- applications for recognition as a Polish citizen (uznanie za obywatela polskiego)
- applications for Polish citizenship granted by the President
- appeals against refusals at every stage
- advice on the documents, including marriage certificates issued abroad and the B1 Polish language certificate
The requirements for spouses
Under the Act on Polish Citizenship, the spouse of a Polish citizen can be recognised as a Polish citizen if they have been married to a Polish citizen for at least 3 years, have lived in Poland continuously for at least 2 years on a permanent residence permit, an EU long-term resident permit or a right of permanent residence, and hold an official certificate of Polish at B1 level or a qualifying Polish school certificate.
The application is decided by the voivode, who has 6 months to issue a decision. The official fee is 1,000 PLN.
The usual path: three stages
- 1.A temporary residence permit based on marriage to a Polish citizen.
- 2.A permanent residence permit, available after at least 3 years of marriage and 2 years of continuous residence on that temporary permit.
- 3.Recognition as a Polish citizen, after a further 2 years of continuous residence on the permanent permit, with a B1 Polish certificate.
Each stage has its own documents and deadlines, and mistakes at an early stage can delay the whole process by years. Planning the route from the start is where most time is saved.
If you may already be Polish by descent
Some spouses of Polish citizens have Polish ancestors of their own. In that case, confirmation of Polish citizenship by descent may be faster than the marriage route and has no residence or language requirement.

- 1.Tell me about your situation: your nationality, the date of your marriage, and your current residence status in Poland.
- 2.I assess which stage you are at, which route is fastest, and what documents you will need.
- 3.I prepare and file the applications and handle correspondence with the authorities through to the decision.
